And this answers one key question many of us had "did this only mean those who directly sold to slaughter or include those who just clearly put their horses on the path to slaughter by selling at auction." A new study: A Study of Equine Slaughter/ Abuse Patterns Following Closure of Horse Slaughter Plants in US Good evidence to dispute the "we need horse slaughter to get rid of the unwanted horses or more horses will be abused." Like previous studies, this shows quite the opposite..that it's the demand for horse meat from Europe that is the reason for slaughter and that abuse and neglect are primarily determined by economic factors. Okay, this will probably throw most people as I usually only post on horse issues. I do care about the war issues, sometimes it is just so overwhelming that I can't take it on online. But South Ossetia is sort of my spiritual home. The people there are descended from the Alan branch of the Sarmatians. I've been concerned about this issue since I first got into exploring what Sarmatian religion might have been like and have been angry about the US alliance with Georgia all along, so since Georgia sent in troops this past week, I've not gotten a lot of sleep. I've started posts, but they're so angry that I can't keep things straight. So I'm reposting this. If nothing else, please look at the last link, okay? It's the Ossetians we should be caring about!

So, the US needs to "spank" Russia for "invading" another smaller nation. Yeah, because we've not done that a few times this century already (and while everyone reading this turns their thoughts to the Middle East, let me remind you also of Haiti http://www.democracynow.org/2004/4/7/witnesses_u_s_special_forces_trained). Even when it's mentioned, rather offhandedly, in national media, that Georgia had taken "an action" in South Ossetia, the fact that Russia itself, with some might argue more right to do so, was "spanking" Georgia for going in and murdering 2,000 civilians.

Now I'm not going to say that the way Russia handling of this wasn't "heavy-handed"....but it is certainly no more so that what the US has done with far less reason. And Georgia is certainly NOT a country that I feel should be seen as a victim here. The real victims are the people of South Ossetia, which has considered itself independent of Georgia since 1992. Now, either one agrees and should see Georgia as attacking a smaller nation OR one disagrees and Georgia set about to attack some of its own people (which the US keeps saying is a no-no too, as long as you're not an ally). But, of course, Georgia has been an important ~~patsy~~ ally in the invasion of Iraq not to mention other oil related deals, so all war crimes committed by Saakashvili and his government just don't exist as far as Bush and co. are concerned.

I think they should to the American people. Right there along with those of Bush and co. I think we all do need to keep aware that this is far more complicated than "oh...big bad Russia attacked little innocent Georgia with no provocation" that I have seen repeatedly posted on the internet.

I ask all concerned to please contact their Representatives about H.R.6598. This would amend Title 18, United States Code, to prohibit certain conduct relating to the use of horses for human consumption.

What does that mean? It means another strike against the transporting of US horses to Canada and Mexico for slaughter!

You can go to The Compassion Index http://www.compassionindex.org/ and type in your zip code to get find out if your Representative is a co-sponsor and if they're record shows they might support this bill. If s/he is not, no matter what his/her record says, please let her/him know you want them to support it. And, please, if s/he IS a sponsor, send her/him a note and/or give a call thanking her/him.

Yes, right now they are on break. Wouldn't it be great if their aides presented them with a pile of notes and phone messages regarding this when the return to session? We need to get this stuff through this year!

BTW, for those of you who do own horses, I have taken to including the fact that as a horse owner I currently live in fear that my filly could be stolen and sent to slaughter. Because, honestly, I DO! We do need to get rid of the fiction that it is "unwanted" horses that go to slaughter, that this is somehow a substitute for taking care of our animals and humane euthanasia. It is NOT. Every horse in America is in danger as long as this exists, horse theft is too prevalent and most horses stolen go to slaughter as it's the quickest way to get rid of the evidence...and the reason most horse thieves steal. Let's make it clear, ALL our horses are in danger!

PREVENTION ACT

Dear friends,

Since it was reintroduced in January 2007, the American Horse Slaughter
Prevention Act (S. 311 - HR 503), a bill to ban the slaughter of US horses and
their exportation for slaughter abroad, has been waiting to be brought up for
consideration in both the Senate and the House where it was denied due process
by a group of pro-slaughter legislators who believe the profits of three
foreign-owned horse slaughter plants outweigh the welfare and safety of American
horses and horse owners alike.

This group of legislators, led by Senator Larry Craig (R – Idaho), has
successfully blocked the bill in the Senate, preventing it from being even
debated on the floor using procedural means and hiding behind a plethora of
myths and fabricat ed stories to support a “need for horse slaughter” while tens
of thousands of American horses continue to be exported for slaughter in Canada and Mexico under appalling
conditions.

As the legislative deadline of mid-September set up by the upcoming elections
approaches, the need to get the AHSPA passed increases dramatically, making
necessary to launch an all-out counterattack to break the pro-slaughter blockade
on the bills and proceed to their consideration in the corresponding chambers.
If the AHSPA is not at least passed by the Senate before mid-September it will
die since there would not be enough time in the brief “lame duck” session taking
place after the elections to move it through the rest of the legislative
process, forcing us to start all over from zero next year and spelling doom for
tens of thousands of additional horses that will be cruelly slaughtered abroad
until we have another chance.

To this end, horse owners and enthusiasts from all over the United States will
gather in Washington DC next March 4 and 5 to lobby their elected officials in a
desperate effort to break Sen. Craig’s blockade on the AHSPA and expedite its passage in both chambers.

In order to be effective, we need to show a massive grass roots support for
those lobbying the legislators on Capitol Hill and let them know that Americans
want the AHSPA passed as soon as possible to end this sordid trade. It is
extremely important that as many people as possible contact their
Representatives and Senators urging them to cosponsor S. 311 and HR 503 if they
have not yet done so and requesting them to press the Senate leadership and to
set S. 311 free from Sen. Craig’s blockade.

How you can help

During next Tuesday, March 4th and Wednesday, March 5th please contact as many
times as possible both your two US Senators and all the Representatives of your
state reques ting them to:

a) Cosponsor S. 311 (Senators) or HR 503 (Representatives) in case they
have yet done so.

b) Ask the Senate Leadership to do everything possible to break Sen.
Craig’s blockade on S. 311 and expedite its passage in both chambers.

If they are already cosponsoring the bills, please praise them for doing so and
request them to keep their support commitment to the end.

Also, please forward this action alert to all your contacts, relatives, friends,
work and school partners asking them to follow it and contact their respective
Congressional delegations in support of the AHSPA. The more people contact
Congress the more chances we have to get the AHSPA passed!

Oct 16 Call in day for Horses being slaughtered at US border

The horror is not ended, it's only not happening in the US but our horses are still being sent, more than ever, to Mexico and Canada for slaughter. As you can read below, the circumstances in Mexico are particularly horrible. We must finish this! We must get Congress to put a stop not only to slaughter in the US but transportation for slaughter to other countries!

Eyes wild, she lowered her head and raised it as the blade punctured her body around the withers, again and again.
At the 10th jab, she fell to the floor of this Mexican slaughterhouse, bloodied and paralyzed, but not yet dead.
She would lay there a good two minutes before being hoisted from a chained rear leg so her throat could be slit and she could bleed to death.

Latest ruling on Cavel horse slaughter plant

There is some worry among the anti-horse slaughter community that this doesn't mean Cavel is closed yet. When it will be enforced and if they will get another extension despite this so they can make further appeals is not yet know as far as I can tell.

Today, The Humane Society of the United States hailed a decision by the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit upholding the State of Illinois' decision to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption.

Illinois is home to the last remaining horse slaughter plant in the country, and the ruling effectively ends all slaughter of horses for food in the United States.

"Today's court decision marks the end of the line for the foreign-owned horse slaughter industry in the United States," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. "Now it's up to Congress to finish the job and protect American horses from being exported to foreign abattoirs in Canada and Mexico for human consumption overseas."

Sitting on the hillside last week watching the beauty of this very historic
herd galloping across the prairie, tears came to my eyes to know that soon
these horses may face the last days of their lives unless WE CAN HELP.

This herd, known as Wild Horse Annie's horses, will be removed next week.
If ISPMB cannot take these horses, they will be sold at auction and will
head to the thriving Canadian Slaughter Market. Can you help us save these
extraordinary horses?

THE STORY:

These wild horses, originating near Virginia City, Nevada, are one of the
most historic herds in the U.S. gaining notoriety in 1952 when Wild Horse
Annie pushed through the first law in Storey County to protect these wild
horses. By 1971 when Annie and ISPMB were successful in getting federal
legislation to protect wild horses and burros, these horses were not covered
because they resided on state land. Human encroachment from residential
development now threatens the Virginia Range herd.

In 2001, ISPMB took steps to save Annie's horses and placed 82 of them on
the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in SD. Today the herd has grown to 300
animals and the Tribe may soon lose their 22,000 acre ranch where the horses
roamed.

We have only a week to seek funding so we can keep these horses from going
to slaughter. ISPMB has no financial reserves since we paid two times the
normal price for hay this past year trucking it in hundreds of miles
enduring the worst drought in our history.

Our goal is to find upwards to 200 qualified homes for the younger horses
and then keep the base herd of 100 animals.

We will need to raise enough money to purchase $50,000 of hay for them for
several months until homes are found for the majority of animals.

I saw our 3 horses after work today!

I saw our 3 horses after work today!

They are fine, healthy and seem a lot more relaxed than last time I saw them!!!

So again, I want to thank all of you for your efforts and opening your wallets to save these lives!
I'll have pics up when I see them again in a couple weeks...I wont forget!

I gave them all lots of kisses and hugs from everybody,
and they loved it! Lots of sweet neighing....

We have named them as well:
Kahlua - for the dark bay
Phoenix - for the dapple
Brody - for the chestnut

My son was with me and just about pee'd when he saw how gorgeous they are in person!
I cant wait to get new so you can all have another peek at them!

And, I slept sooooo good last night! It felt great.....

Today no horses will legally die of slaughter for the purpose of human consumption in the United States. There is still much horror out there, but this is a battle won. As noted, there are still appeals, but I must believe that this is the end for Cavel.

A horse slaughtering plant in DeKalb will not open for business Friday after the failure of last-ditch efforts to prevent enforcement of a new state law that forbids production of horse meat for human consumption.

U.S. District Court Judge Frederick Kapala on Thursday refused to extend his June 1 order, which stayed enforcement of the law. The judge had already extended the order once. The order expired Thursday night, thus making continued operation of the plant illegal.

Of course, appeals are still happening, but from their panic I would say that it will be financially unfeasible for it to ever open up again! And I think they're seriously deluded if they think they can win.

This isn't over yet, folks! If you haven't done so, or if you haven't liked their responses, please write your Representatives and Senators to get those bills through. Horses are still being trucked to Canada and Mexico. We need to protect them ALL.

As we anticipated, Judge Capala has denied the HSUS petition to intervene as a defendant. He has agreed to accept an amicus brief from them (Cavel did not object to that, so he isn't going out on any limbs there).

The Horse Council of Illinois has asked to file an amicus brief on the part of the plaintiffs (Cavel), indicating that the HSUS represents an emotional position and not a rational one.

The slaughter of horses in DeKalb could resume as soon as Saturday after a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order overriding a new state law against killing or possessing the animals for human consumption, said an attorney for the plant.

Judge Frederick Kapala in the Rockford branch of U.S. District Court issued the order Friday, a week after Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed a bill prohibiting the slaughter of horses for human consumption. Cavel International Inc. of Belgium, owners of the DeKalb plant, filed suit on May 25 to overturn the law on constitutional and other grounds.

Springfield, IL --- In exciting win for opponents of horse slaughter, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich on Thursday (May 24) signed a bill permanently banning horse slaughter in Illinois.

The legislation comes three weeks after Cavel International -- the state’s notorious horse slaughterhouse, and the only one still operating in the United States -- was granted an emergency federal court stay, halting a ruling to close its doors in DeKalb.

Cavel International Inc., a Belgium-based company that operates a horse slaughterhouse in DeKalb, filed suit Friday in federal court seeking to nullify a state law that closed down the plant.

The law, signed Thursday by Gov. Rod Blagojevich, prohibits the import, export, possession and slaughter of horses intended for human consumption.

With only 9 days left in the Texas legislative session, the horse slaughtering plants have one last chance to legalize horse slaughter. To do this they must get SB 911 to the House floor so they can ADD a pro-slaughter amendment to it. To stop this action, we must kill SB 911 in the House Calendars Committee and we must do it now. The Illinois State Senate just passed HB 1711 (39-16-2), a bill to ban horse slaughter in the State of Illinois. This bill overwhelmingly passed the Illinois House earlier this month.

The bill now goes to Governor Rod Blagojevich for his signature. The Governor has committed his support to SAPL and has stated he will sign the bill immediately. Once the Governor signs the bill it goes into effect immediately.

Along with the federal bills to stop horse slaughter in the US AND the transportation of horses to Canada and Mexico for slaughter, Illinois has a bill that passed the State House a couple of weeks ago and is currently in committee in the State Senate. Anyone in the state reading this, please contact your State Senators. The rest of us need to continue to encourage our Representatives and Senators to pass the federal bills.

This must be stopped! Please pass this along and it is crossposted to the usual suspects.

Getting closer to ending the slaughter!

It's been forever since I posted here! I'd been working on stuff, but not active online. There is hope that we will stop horse slaughter in the US all together!

Texas finally had a federal court uphold the law against horse slaughter in the state. They are the home of two of the three foreign owned slaughter houses that slaughter horses in our country. More recently, a federal court established that the USDA could not allow their inspectors to take money to inspect these three plants, something that was started after the ruling that federal funds could not be used to have these plants inspected. So all horse slaughter, at the last reports I heard, has stopped in the US.

On April 26, HR 249, the prohibition on the commercial sale and slaughter of wild free-roaming horses and burros, which can overturn the infamous Burns' Rider, passed the House by a vote of 277 to 137, with 18 no voting. On the 25th, S 311, the Senate version of The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, passed the Commerce Committee on the 25th. Now is a good time to contact your Senators to get them to vote for this when it comes up.

No word on HR 503, the House version of The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. But please do contact your Senator, if they voted for HR 249 then ask her/him to continue the trend, if they voted against it please ask them to redeem themselves by voting for this one.

I am writing because U.S. Department of Agriculture might put all of
your hard work to save horses from slaughter at risk, and we desperately
need your help.

We had a remarkable year for horses during 2005. With help from
dedicated advocates like you, we:

a.. Convinced the U.S. House of Representatives to pass an amendment
by a landslide vote of 269-158 to prevent the use of tax dollars to promote
horse slaughter.
b.. Then we secured a big 69-28 vote in the Senate in favor of an
identical amendment.
c.. Finally, when it appeared that the conference committee might
remove the horse slaughter language entirely, we worked together again to
ensure that the ban stayed in the final bill (with an added 120-day delay
for implementation).
We all celebrated these tremendous victories as the year closed,
anticipating that on March 10, 2006, horse slaughter in America would stop
for the remainder of the year, paving the way for more progress and a
permanent ban.

But now, the horse slaughter ban is in danger again and we need your
help to save it!

Never did we imagine that the USDA, an administrative agency charged
with carrying out Congress' will, might betray Congress and the Americans
they represent. But it appears that the agency might try to side-step this
new law by finding a way to continue inspections of horses for slaughter,
and thereby continue its involvement with the cruel and un-American horse
slaughter industry. The USDA is seriously considering a petition submitted
by the foreign-owned slaughter plants that would create a whole new manner
of paying for horse slaughter, an effort that directly undermines Congress'
mandate.

Tell the USDA to respect the will of Congress and enforce the
slaughter ban.

Americans don't eat horsemeat -- there simply is no domestic demand
for it. But last year, more than 90,000 American horses were either killed
in one of three foreign-owned slaughterhouses in the United States or
shipped to Canada or Mexico for slaughter. Our thoroughbreds, show horses,
mustangs, carriage horses, and family ponies are shipped in inhumane
conditions and butchered.

This new development means that the thousands of horses who were to be
spared are again at grave risk. We cannot let this happen. Take action today
to help stop USDA from engaging in this inhumane slaughter for export.

1. Take action. Contact USDA Secretary Johanns and urge him to shut
down this illegal and undemocratic usurpation of Congress' authority. Click

2. Spread the word. The USDA needs to hear from as many Americans as
possible. Ask your friends and family to contact them as well. Click here to
tell five friends to take action now.

Knowing that thousands of our loyal and trusted companions have
already been slaughtered is simply devastating. Please, stand with us and do
everything you can to spare the lives of our horses. Together, we will stop
this horrible practice.

The Sweeney-Spratt Amendment to House Agriculture Appropriations Bill passed the House. This isn't the same bill as my last email, I'll be trying to find out about that one, but this one is for all horses, not just the Wild ones. S576 is being introduced to the Senate, this will reverse the Burn's Rider that is allowing Mustangs and Wild Burros to be sold for meat by the BLM. Ford saved 52 Mustangs slated for slaughter and paid to transport them to a place they can be cared for. There were 41 others at the slaughterhouse who were killed, though.
