Cavel Closes!

Today no horses will legally die of slaughter for the purpose of human consumption in the United States. There is still much horror out there, but this is a battle won. As noted, there are still appeals, but I must believe that this is the end for Cavel.

A horse slaughtering plant in DeKalb will not open for business Friday after the failure of last-ditch efforts to prevent enforcement of a new state law that forbids production of horse meat for human consumption.

U.S. District Court Judge Frederick Kapala on Thursday refused to extend his June 1 order, which stayed enforcement of the law. The judge had already extended the order once. The order expired Thursday night, thus making continued operation of the plant illegal.

Of course, appeals are still happening, but from their panic I would say that it will be financially unfeasible for it to ever open up again! And I think they're seriously deluded if they think they can win.

This isn't over yet, folks! If you haven't done so, or if you haven't liked their responses, please write your Representatives and Senators to get those bills through. Horses are still being trucked to Canada and Mexico. We need to protect them ALL.

Read, vote in poll, discuss!

2 Calls to Action to stop horse slaughter!

These are forwards...the first is regarding the lawsuit in Illinois.
Dear Friends,

As we anticipated, Judge Capala has denied the HSUS petition to intervene as a defendant. He has agreed to accept an amicus brief from them (Cavel did not object to that, so he isn't going out on any limbs there).

The Horse Council of Illinois has asked to file an amicus brief on the part of the plaintiffs (Cavel), indicating that the HSUS represents an emotional position and not a rational one.

If you disagree with this position, visit their gateway page. You will find links to their sponsors there. I have followed them to get to the contact links for all four. You can email their sponsors and tell them that you do not intend to use their products as long as they support the HCI.

The following one is because the Illinois lawsuit, as well as the transportation of horses to Canada and Mexico for slaughter, again show we NEED the federal bill passed ASAP!

Dear Friends,

As you all know, our Senators are dragging their feet to stand up for our horses this year.

In 2006, we had 34 co-sponsors for the AHSPA (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SN01915:@@@P), today we have 27. Why? Some who co-sponsored last year are not on our list, two of them are Presidential candidates.

It's time to focus on those who signed up last year, or who have a lot to lose by not signing on. Let's let them know how we feel and get this done, before we are looking at 2008 and so many more horses are barbarically murdered.

To begin, I am asking everyone to contact these four Senators. Please, be polite, but be strong in your request. It is time for this law to be passed and the American people are heard.

Please call, fax and forward this to everyone you know. Educate as many people as you can. So many still don't know about this atrocity!

These are the four Senators that we need to get on board at this time:

The Honorable Charles Schumer (co-sponsored in 2006)

It is time for these Senators to join us and state emphatically that they are against horse slaughter. Let's let them know how we feel! If you would like to see who has co-sponsored so far in 2007, you can see here: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:SN00311:@@@P

Thank you for helping our horses!

Judge stays shutdown of horse slaughter plant

The slaughter of horses in DeKalb could resume as soon as Saturday after a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order overriding a new state law against killing or possessing the animals for human consumption, said an attorney for the plant.

Judge Frederick Kapala in the Rockford branch of U.S. District Court issued the order Friday, a week after Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed a bill prohibiting the slaughter of horses for human consumption. Cavel International Inc. of Belgium, owners of the DeKalb plant, filed suit on May 25 to overturn the law on constitutional and other grounds.

This has already been posted on the Stop Horse Slaughter Tribe by Sawjja and in several fora by saigh_allaidh copying Saigh:

Springfield, IL --- In exciting win for opponents of horse slaughter, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich on Thursday (May 24) signed a bill permanently banning horse slaughter in Illinois.

The legislation comes three weeks after Cavel International -- the state’s notorious horse slaughterhouse, and the only one still operating in the United States -- was granted an emergency federal court stay, halting a ruling to close its doors in DeKalb.

Cavel International Inc., a Belgium-based company that operates a horse slaughterhouse in DeKalb, filed suit Friday in federal court seeking to nullify a state law that closed down the plant.

The law, signed Thursday by Gov. Rod Blagojevich, prohibits the import, export, possession and slaughter of horses intended for human consumption.

I was reminded that foreign owned companies do, actually, have more rights than US States do these days. They may just win. WE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT NOW NEED THE FEDERAL BAN!!! Please keep working on this folks!

The following is a forward, please pass this on!

There is still a very real danger that horse slaughter will be legalized in Texas. With only 9 days left in the Texas legislative session, the horse slaughtering plants have one last chance to legalize horse slaughter. To do this they must get SB 911 to the House floor so they can ADD a pro-slaughter amendment to it. To stop this action, we must kill SB 911 in the House Calendars Committee and we must do it now. We are asking everyone to contact each member of the Calendars Committee immediately and urge them to kill SB 911.

Subject: Illinois State Senate Votes to Ban Horse Slaughter in Illinois
Importance: High

The Illinois State Senate just passed HB 1711 (39-16-2), a bill to ban horse slaughter in the State of Illinois. This bill overwhelmingly passed the Illinois House earlier this month.

The bill now goes to Governor Rod Blagojevich for his signature. The Governor has committed his support to SAPL and has stated he will sign the bill immediately. Once the Governor signs the bill it goes into effect immediately.

Thanks to everyone for your help and support! Now we must pass the federal American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311) to ensure our horses aren't sent to Mexico or Canada for slaughter.

Texas to allow horse slaughter again?

From saigh_allaidh again:

"The horse slaughter debate is continuing its rollercoaster ride in the United States, with Illinois moving a step closer to a ban, while animal rights campaigners claim Texas is moving closer to allowing the practice again."

Along with the federal bills to stop horse slaughter in the US AND the transportation of horses to Canada and Mexico for slaughter, Illinois has a bill that passed the State House a couple of weeks ago and is currently in committee in the State Senate. Anyone in the state reading this, please contact your State Senators. The rest of us need to continue to encourage our Representatives and Senators to pass the federal bills.

This must be stopped! Please pass this along and it is crossposted to the usual suspects.
